In the morning of April 19th, the head of the Research Innovation Unit Fabian Borg, with his team Cathleen Diacono & Shirley Attard, had the pleasure of addressing “Ġenerazzjoni Klima” (Generation Climate) at the Parliament of Malta presided by the Speaker Honorable Anġlu Farrugia.
The politically neutral conference organized by Honorable Eve Borg Bonello included President Emeritus (former President of Malta), Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, MPs from both sides of the House, and representatives of NGOs, young adults, and children. The teens’ and children’s impassioned pleas for action on the environment and climate were truly heartfelt.
“The teens’ and children’s impassioned pleas for action on the environment and climate were truly heartfelt.”
Throughout the address we presented the Malta Urban Heat Island App and the Malta Climate Change Impact Analysis Heat Severity App that outlays the gravity of heat severity over the Maltese Archipelago in a longitudinal analysis spanning just four years. The study uses thermal remote sensing from NASA/USGS Landsat 8 & 9 earth observing satellites whereby quality-assured data is converted into public-facing scientific visualization in the forms of web apps through the use and flexibility of ESRI’s ArcGIS Online Apps.
We took the opportunity to introduce to the audience the action being done by the EU Mission Adaptation to Climate Change, which the unit is in charge of on behalf of the signed regions of Malta. We also mentioned our H2020 and Horizon Europe ongoing projects VARCITIES—Green Cities are Healthier Cities, GoGreen Routes, and JUSTNatureProject.
