The STREAM Project Seminar brought together stakeholders, researchers, scientists, academics, and students to explore the integration and benefits of satellite data in environmental monitoring. Financed by the Malta Council for Science & Technology through the Space Research Fund, the seminar highlighted the following key areas:

Opening Session:

  • Welcome Speeches: Delivered by key figures, including Aldo Drago, Stephen Sammut, Tatjana Chircop, Tonio Portuguese, and Hon. Keith Azzopardi Tanti.

Project Presentations:

  • First Stage Deliverables: Aldo Drago outlined the STREAM Project’s initial achievements, emphasizing backend operations, data orchestration, and the development of the STREAM mobile app for satellite data services.
  • Technical Insights: Gabriel Camilleri presented on backend architecture, Ryan Vella on data layers and processing, and Daniel Vencler on automation and data publishing.
  • Web Data Services: David Debono and Lorinc Meszaros presented web data services and workflows for producing Sentinel-3 derived indicators of algal bloom events.
  • UHI: Fabian Borg, head of the Research Innovation Unit, presented the urban heat stress monitoring for the Maltese Islands.

Networking and Capitalisation:

  • National Cluster on Marine Observations: Aldo Drago discussed connecting stakeholders for marine observations.
  • Malta Space Initiative: Glenn Attard provided insights into Malta’s space engagement programs.
  • Stakeholder Presentations: Included urban heat stress monitoring, coastal change monitoring, marine data in policy implementation, and satellite imagery for environmental management.
  • Foreign Contributions: Presentations from Branimir Radun and Peter Vanik shared Croatian and EU experiences on marine habitat mapping and sustainable tourism innovations.
