Throughout August 2022, the Head of the Research Innovation Unit, Mr Fabian Borg, was selected as a fellow of the RISE Cities Fellowship in tandem with Dr Edward Duca of the University of Malta. The tandem represents the JUSTNature Gzira implementation within such a network for 2022-23.

Between the 27th and the 30th of September, the tandem attended the Responsible Leaders Days RISE Cities held in the beautiful natural setting of The HOME in the Pyrenees mountains, Spain, and kicked off the RISE Cities Fellowship. The Responsible Leadership program runs in a hybrid set-up of in-person kick-off and project-ending meetings amidst extensive online leadership training sessions.

“Responsible Leaders Days RISE Cities was a lived experience on its own. This reflective leadership journey is something I will cherish for time to come; I learned to see situations from an entirely new perspective, a plus towards accomplishing my vision of transformational leadership” – F. Borg

About the RISE Cities program

The scope of the RISE Cities program is to advance responsible leadership in cities and global knowledge on four pillars of Resilient, Intelligent, Sustainable, and Equitable (RISE) cities. RISE Cities identifies urban challenges and facilitates mutual learning to support the development of local solutions. The program seeks to establish a platform that engages all urban stakeholders – politicians, bureaucrats, scientists, urbanists, architects, the business community, and civil society. This network works to identify and help implement new strategies and projects for sustainable urban development under the auspicious United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) SDG11. RISE Cities is a program of the BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt, a non-profit organisation and supporter of the United Nations, whose scope is to promote responsible leadership and inspires leaders worldwide to work towards a more peaceful, just and sustainable future.
