26th May 2023, the head of the Research Innovation Unit Mr Fabian Borg and his tandem Dr Edward Duca of University of Malta attended the BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt Re*Leadership Festival held at Banegaarden, Copenhagen. The festival marked their successful completion of RISE Cities Fellowship and contemporary their accession to the BMW Foundation Responsible Leaders Network. The Maltese tandem formed part of the first cohort of fellows of the RISE Cities fellowship program.

150+ leaders from 30+ countries took collective discussions in the festival’s theme “If regenerative solutions are closely linked to certain values, thought patterns and future visions, what would that mean for the transformation of business, finance and cities?”

The discussions were carried out in 6 houses at the BaneGaarden and the accompanying sustainable Velux houses as follows:

  • House of Radical Collaboration
  • House of Transformation
  • House of Innovation
  • House of Balance

5.82°C is the story line of the Maltese Tandem presentation within the House of RE*Leadership on representation of JUSTNature Gzira. 5.82°C is the measured (upward temperature) of the Urban Heat Island of the locality of Gzira and it was represented through the lived experience of the 13,000 residents of the locality. Fabian Borg took on to present the scientific/analytical part, whereas Dr Duca presented the citizen engagement and co-creation of nature based solutions to counter the excessive Urban Heat Island.

RISE Cities Fellowship Program

RISE Cities Fellowship is a hybrid program with a group of 24 leaders from 12 European cities working in tandems to develop ideas and solutions for their cities through immersive sessions, masterclasses, online coaching and mentoring by outstanding urban experts and members of the BMW Foundation Responsible Leaders Network.
