20th January 2023, Research Innovation Unit successfully commissioned the first outdoor LoRaWAN Gateway on the façade of the administrative building of the Gzira Local Council. The gateway, a RAK7249 WisGate Edge Max with dual 858-878MHz 5.8dBi antennae, was procured for the European Commission Horizon 2020 JUSTNature project. The scope of the gateway is to connect the various LoRa sensors that will be installed in the locality of Gzira.

“To shape our cities and make them more sustainable and liveable for the community by ensuring a just transition to low-carbon cities through nature-based solutions”

The installation of the LoRaWAN Gateway marks the birth of an Internet of Things (IoT) permanent smart city solution intended to serve the digital twin of the locality of Gzira with live 24/7 data and further research. JUSTNature-funded, sensors will include air quality monitors, noise level monitors, wind anemometers, temperature, humidity, and traffic counters. Future funding will include land and sea-based metrological stations and severe weather/flooding alarm systems.

Upon the successful pilot project in the locality of Gzira, it is envisioned that the pilot will be replicated with all the localities that form part of the Eastern and Port Regions of Malta.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under Grant Agreement No. 101003757
